The Knowledge House partnering as the Bronx Digital Pipeline with Hostos Community College and Per Scholas to develop pathways into technology jobs.

criteria

Young adults who succeed in our programs tend to be:

  • Self-motivated & willing to figure things out on their own
  • Good at problem solving and exercise some level of creativity
  • Driven to seek knowledge, always ready to learn more

Since our goal is to prepare young adults for job placement in tech, we encourage interested applicants to commit to 2-3 technical training programs (~1 year, program schedules vary) to increase their chances of success. A young person who might not meet all of the criteria is still welcome to come learn with us - all we ask is that they are interested in tech to some capacity!

career network: Healthcare

A partnership between Phipps Neighborhoods, Hostos Community College and Montefiore Medical Center for careers in allied healthcare.

criteria

  • Must be between 18–26 years of age
  • Have a H.S. Diploma or GED
  • Be able to pass a background check and drug screening
  • Customer Services Experience
  • Basic Computer Skills
  • Ability to work under pressure and/or in high pace environment
  • Be able to lift 5lbs-25lbs (minimum)
  • Handle or see blood without becoming squeamish or nauseous
  • Ability to display patience and empathy regularly

CDI Career Academy

Comprehensive Development, Inc. and Borough of Manhattan Community College prepare for careers in healthcare and earning a Certified Medical Assistant credential.

Criteria

  • Must have attained a HS Diploma/GED prior to beginning program
  • Must be out of school and out of work
  • Be between the ages of 18–24
  • Eligible to work in the United States
  • Compassionate with a desire to help people
  • Interested in pursuing a career in the health sector

The champion network

Cypress Hills Local Development Corporation partners with transportation and logistics employers to offer a career pathway.

 

criteria

  • Ages 21–30
  • Clean driving record of 3 years or more
  • Able to pass a drug test
  • A passion or interest in helping the elderly and other vulnerable populations to live a normal life
  • Able to read directions
  • Capable of making safe, professional decisions in the field unsupervised
  • Comfortable working inside and outside in all weather

Green City Force

Green City Force, with partners Association for Energy Affordability, Con Edison, L+M Development Partners, C+C Management, and NYCHA’s REES Office focus on the sustainability sector.

Criteria

  • Between 18 to 24 years of age
  • New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) resident
  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Proof of Identification required
  • Documentation of Citizenship/Legal Resident Status required
  • Not enrolled in college for the upcoming semester
  • Does not have an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree
  • Able to travel to service sites in all five boroughs
  • Able work outdoors in all weather
  • Interest in sustainability and protecting the earth

PHI & CHCA

Paraprofessional Healthcare Institute (PHI) and Cooperative Home Care Associates (CHCA) train in the healthcare sector.

 

Criteria

CHCA does not accept large numbers of trainees into its entry-level training program. Instead, recruitment staff utilize an assessment and selection process designed to identify the candidates most likely to succeed as caregivers. Candidates interested in enrolling into our home care worker training program are usually successful when they are able to meet the following mandatory requirements:

  • The ability to pass a drug screen
  • The ability to work between the hours of 8 am and 6 pm and alternating weekends
  • Physically able to work in the capacity of a home care worker, which includes: some bending, some lifting, some twisting
  • A desire to begin a career in the health or home care industry

A candidate’s success rate usually increases when s/he meets one or more of the following optional criteria:

  • Have had some formal or informal caregiving experience
  • Show compassion for other human beings
  • Demonstrate a basic ability to set priorities and resolve problems
  • Prior work experience in the health or home care industry

Queens Connect

Queens Community House, Jacob Riis Neighborhood Settlement House, Ocean Bay Community Development Corp, Sunnyside Community Services prepare young adults for success in the food industry.

Criteria

  • Age 18–24, not enrolled in college
  • NYC resident
  • Eligible to work in the U.S.
  • Interested in working with food
  • Available to work evenings and weekends
  • Be comfortable learning in a fast-paced environment

isaacs center

Isaacs Center partners with local employers to train young adults for careers in hospitality and food service. Isaacs Center also offers trainings in community health and education and child development.

criteria

There are no baseline requirements to enter the program, such as reading at specific grade level or having a high school diploma or its equivalent. Young adults who join must be between the ages of 17 and 24 and not in school and/or are currently unemployed or underemployed. Interested in finding a career not just a job. In addition, they must meet the following criteria:

  • Eligible to work in the U.S.; and
  • Able to work evenings and weekends; and
  • Able to work in a fast pace environment; and
  • A desire to work in Culinary Arts; or
  • Ability to work with young children; or
  • A desire to work in health care (ie home health care, hospitals, pharmacies); and
  • Willing to work in customer service environments

techbridge

Per Scholas, partnering with The Door to focus on expanding access to the information technology sector.

criteria

Admission to Per Scholas is competitive with some strict requirements. You may qualify for TechBridge if you:

  • Are 18–24 years of age
  • Are curious, motivated, and have a passion for technology
  • Are unemployed or underemployed
  • Score above a 7.5 on both the Math and Reading sections of the TABE
  • Have a high school diploma or the equivalent
  • Have a passion for understanding how things work

theatrical workforce development program

Roundabout Theatre Company in partnership with the IATSE union and The Door provide training for access to career pathways in the technical theatre industry.

This is a full time year-long training program. 

criteria

  • Age 18–24, not enrolled in college
  • NYC resident
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Eligible to work in the U.S.
  • Work evenings and weekends
  • Be able to lift 50 lbs
  • Work in an environment with darkness, loud noises, and strobe lights
  • Be comfortable with heights and climbing
  • Technical theatre requires the ability to problem solve, especially in potentially pressured situations
